A source, a drain, and two gates make up the four-layer, three-terminal Dual-Gate MOSFET, just like its single-gate equivalent. To keep the gates separate from the transistor's channel area, these Dual MOSFETs are made of two oxide layers and a metal layer.

The two grids of the dual gate MOSFET regulate the current flowing through the channel, giving rise to what is sometimes called a tetrode architecture. The several gates regulate distinct segments of the channel that are connected in series with one another.
